How to fill gap nights on Airbnb and Vrbo

By Yash, founder of Stayvane. Numbers checked .

A gap night is an open stretch between two bookings that is shorter than your minimum stay, so guests cannot book it. Fill gaps by setting a shorter minimum for those dates, pricing them to sell, and checking every week. The cost is more turnovers and more cleanings.

What is a gap night?

A gap night is a run of open nights between two reservations that is shorter than your minimum stay. With a 5-night minimum and 4 open nights, no guest can book the gap, and the nights go unsold. Airbnb shows hosts a tip to lower the minimum for those nights when this happens (Airbnb Resource Center).

How do you fill gap nights step by step?

Fill gap nights by listing the open runs each week, setting a shorter trip length for those dates, and pricing the gap to sell. The five steps below take about ten minutes per listing, and they stop you from shortening your peak weekends by mistake.

  1. List the gaps. Once a week, open each listing's calendar for the next 60 days and write down every open run shorter than your minimum.
  2. Set a custom trip length for those dates. Airbnb lets you add a custom trip length shorter than your minimum for certain dates, which is its own suggested way to fill open nights (Airbnb Resource Center).
  3. Price the gap to sell. A one-night gap between two stays has little other value. A modest discount, 5% to 15%, is usually enough to test. Hold the discount for gaps inside the next 21 days.
  4. Avoid the nights that already sell. Do not shorten the minimum on peak weekends. Use check-in-day rules instead, which Airbnb also supports.
  5. Review after a week. Count how many gaps filled and what you earned per gap. Keep the rule if it earns more than the cleaning costs.

Does a shorter minimum stay always make you more money?

No. A shorter minimum fills more gaps but increases turnovers, and each turnover has a cleaning and laundry cost plus some wear. Wheelhouse puts the trade-off plainly: "Longer minimum stays will decrease the number of cleanings, which means more potential revenue," while "shorter minimum stays will lead to more reservations on the whole" (Wheelhouse). The gap only pays if the extra revenue beats the turnover cost.

Can a pricing tool do this for you?

Yes, in part. Third-party tools offer gap rules. Uplisting's Gap Night feature lowers the minimum stay for any gap at or above a size threshold you set (Uplisting). Wheelhouse uses a gap buffer: with a 5-night minimum and a 3-night gap, a buffer of 1 reduces the minimum for that gap to 2 nights (Wheelhouse). The tool follows the rule you set. A person still has to decide what rule fits each listing.

When should you leave a gap empty?

Leave a gap empty when the turnover cost is close to the nightly rate, when the gap borders a block of nights you would sell at a higher price, or when local rules set a minimum stay you must follow. Airbnb says minimum and maximum lengths must follow local rules and regulations. Short stays can also draw a different kind of guest, so watch your reviews after a month.

Gap nights are one of the checks in our free payout audit. It lists the open runs in your calendar so you can see what they cost. Our weekly check guide turns the same method into a 15-minute routine.

Questions hosts ask

Hosts ask the questions below most often on this topic. Each answer is complete on its own, with the figure and the condition that changes it. We last checked them on October 23, 2026.

What is a gap night on Airbnb?

An open run of nights between two bookings that is shorter than your minimum stay, so guests cannot book it. Airbnb shows a tip to lower the minimum for those nights.

How do I let guests book a short gap?

Add a custom trip length, shorter than your normal minimum, for the dates in the gap. Airbnb offers this in the calendar settings for specific dates.

How much discount should a gap night get?

Start with 5% to 15% and test for a week. A one-night gap has little other use, so a small discount is usually enough. Count the filled gaps before changing the rule.

Do shorter minimum stays cost more in cleaning?

Yes. More stays means more turnovers, each with a cleaning and laundry cost. The gap pays only if the added revenue is larger than that turnover cost.

Can I set a different minimum by check-in day?

Yes. Airbnb lets you set the minimum based on the day of check-in, which protects peak weekends while still allowing shorter midweek stays.
